Parenting A Parent by Tara Shuler, paperback

The Day the Roles Flip, Nobody Hands You a Playbook.

Controlling the hardest conversations of your life with a parent who still thinks they are in charge.

When did you become the adult in the room? For Tara it was a Tuesday morning phone call. Her dad was gone, her mom was disabled, and the job of caring for her had just become Tara's. She did it for seven years. This book is what she learned about the conversations that come with it, the car keys, the house, the help they refuse, the home they swear they will never go to, and how to run them with questions instead of orders, so the relationship survives.

  • Why aging parents resist help, and how to get buy-in instead of giving orders they will fight.
  • The Emotional Volume Dial. De-escalating a parent who is scared, without raising your own.
  • "I'm not going to a home" and the other hard nos. A full chapter on handling them, plus the Caregiver Objection Deck in the back.
  • Siblings, spouses, and family disagreement. Getting everyone into one decision without one more fight.
  • The Long Goodbye. How to open the end-of-life planning conversation, and when.
  • 211 pages16 chapters plus the Objection Deck
